People come to Tahoe from all over the world to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Sierras, but many come to fish in some of the most spectacular settings the world has ever known. Lake Tahoe has great fishing, trout, salmon, mackinaw, catfish and many others. Some of my favorite fishing holes though are out in Hope Valley. There's Red Lake, Caples Lake and Blue Lakes all within a few miles of eachother, and all are great spots to spend the day rustlin' up some dinner. Don't waste another minute, grab your rod and tackle box and enjoy fishing the areas most breathtaking and relaxing lakes.So, remember now, "Fishing is just a jerk at one end of the pole waiting for a jerk at the other end". lol

Black Bears in Lake Tahoe
Black Bears
Black Bears
As most of the locals are aware, the black bears have come out of hibernation and have been foraging to fill their hungry bellys. And when I say foraging, of course what I mean is "raiding our trash cans". As a long time local I've come to accept the fact that on occassion my trash cans will be molested by the coyotes and bears, but this is a small price to pay to have the treat of being able to see them without having to go to a zoo.
After a long Winter's sleep these bears wake up hungry and go in search of food, which usually leads them onto our properties and into our trash cans. We devise ways to thwart them off;
We only put our trash cans out on the morning that the refuse trucks come to do their pick up.
We have metal "bear boxes" installed to hide our trash cans from them.
We pour a little bleach or amonia onto the top of our trash (they hate the smell).
Or we do nothing and just clean up the mess in the morning.

These two bears are using my fence as their escape route out of my back yard after I startled them last night while they were trying to do some reconnaissance for food in my yard. Black bears are docile animals and are more likely to be spooked by our presence and flee than they would be upset and combative. And I've never heard of a black bear attacking anyone, so I think that you'd have to do a series of stupid things to have one of these beautiful creatures come after you.

These two bears are about 2 years old
The reason I think they are about two years old is because two Winters ago I had two bear cubs and their mommy checking out my property. And bears are well known to be creatures of habit and stay in their comfortable zone or in our case, neighborhood. That's why I'm pretty sure these are the two cubs that I remember seeing two years ago, and I think that's pretty cool.

You can see that while bears have a lethargic, clumsy appearance, they are infact very capable of showing athletic climbing and balancing abilities. These two bears easily skaled my fence and then walked the fence line effortlessly on a 2" x 4" fence rail. This is something that would be hard for most people to do much less a 400 lb. black bear.

This bear is about 10 feet away from me, but...
Firstly, I do not recommend people trying to get within 10 feet of bears, that said, my "escape route" was my back door which is only a couple of feet away from where I snapped this image. But after I snapped this photo, this bear's sibling (that I hadn't seen) poked itself around the corner of my house being about 2 feet away from me, yikes. So instead of me thinking that there was a single bear about 10 feet away, there were infact two bears and I couldv'e shook hands (errr, paws) with one of them, yeehaw.
